What the Web is, and what the Web is Definitely Not!

by Jason Marshall on March 2, 2011

The Web is most certainly the greatest invention of the modern age enabling humans all over the World almost instant access to “Everything”. We can look up information about wilderness survival, basket weaving, hearing aids, and anything else your mind can think of. It’s all right there, at the tip of our fingers, and it’s growing everyday!

Not only can we find and consume information at a pace never before possible, we can also publish information faster than ever before possible. As I type this, I only have to hit one button to publish it for the World to see (hopefully)! Small businesses now have extraordinary capabilities and market reach and international commerce is easier and more commonplace than ever. Pretty much, all thanks to the Internet. The Internet is most definitely, “The” pre-eminent business platform of the modern age!

Now, for all the things the Internet is, what is is definitely NOT is an end-all-be-all-miracle machine that magically makes business happen! The Internet is just a bunch of dumb computers hooked together via fiber wire. We have to work hard to tell those machines what to do, even as sophisticated as they are these days, they still need an educated operator to execute series of steps to customize Internet business solutions.

The Internet is NOT the field of dreams. Just because you build a Web site, does not mean anyone will come and visit it. It takes a creative blend of business, marketing and tech-savvy, with an eye on usability and functional design vs aesthetics and visual design; and that  is something that comes with experience and countless hours of professional study and research. In other words, the Internet is only as good as the person operating it. Having a Web site isn’t enough. You need a professional Web slinger to build a solution based on hard facts, data, and research. One that looks good, functions better, and attracts Web traffic.

Another reason to hate IE (Internet Explorer)

February 22, 2010

TweetFrom a web designers perspective, IE has been horrible for years. The worst part is, that it is not getting better! It is almost as though Microsoft deliberately disregards any feedback it gets from the developer community. Why is it that we STILL have to make special concessions to our otherwise STANDARDS COMPLIANT code just [...]

One thing PC users can do that Mac users can’t

January 18, 2010

TweetEvery since computers came out, the question has been, do I buy Mac or PC? Aside from being terribly expensive, Macs are beautiful computers. I prefer PC’s since most of the world runs on PC’s. Awhile back I read an article by Maddox that is worth re-visiting here.

Interactive Web Sites – History of Flash

January 18, 2010

TweetThroughout the short history of Web design, few applications have made as big of an impact as Flash. For those who remember, or those who are learning it for the first time, here is an excerpt from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Online Lecture, “What is Flash?”. Flash was introduced in 1996 by Macromedia and [...]
