Why Color is the Most Relative Medium in Art and Design

by Jason Marshall on December 4, 2009

Color is often considered the most relative medium in art and design. This is because all people interpret color differently, and it is easy to manipulate ones perception of color. If you showed the color red to 10 different people and then asked them to pick out the shade of red from a line-up of different shades of red, likely, everyone will pick different shades.

Also, one single color can appear different based on its’ surroundings. If you take one color and put it in the center of a background it will appear one way. If you take the same color and put it in the center of a different color background, the color can appear very different.

Alternatively, different colors can be made to appear the same, again, based on the color of its background color.

It is because different people can perceive different colors differently, and colors can appear differently based on it’s surroundings, that color is considered the most relative medium in art and design.
